The National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), an autonomous research institute under the Ministry of Finance, has conducted a study. It states that currently Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are the two states where people spend the most money on alcohol compared to any other state in the country. According to NSSO data, in 2011-12 also, Andhra Pradesh was at the first place among the states spending the most on alcohol with Rs 620 crore.
According to the Consumer Pyramid Household Survey (HPHS) of the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the highest expenditure on alcohol is in Telangana, where an average household spends Rs 1623 per year. In contrast, the lowest expenditure is in Uttar Pradesh, where Rs 75 and Rs 49 are spent respectively.
