Raipur. Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma has said that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in the state. There is no challenge for us to implement it. He made this statement while addressing a program during his Delhi visit. The previous government of the state has been opposing the Uniform Civil Code. After this statement of the Deputy Chief Minister, the debate has started once again in the state regarding the Uniform Civil Code. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has said that the tribals should not be misled in the name of Uniform Civil Code. Tell the date when it will be implemented?

In June 2023, while addressing a gathering in Madhya Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while advocating for the Uniform Civil Code, said that there cannot be two different rules in the same family. How will the household run with such a dual system? Modi had said that the Supreme Court has said it again and again. The Supreme Court hits the stick. It says bring the Common Civil Code, but these vote bank hungry people are creating hurdles in it. After this statement of the Prime Minister, speculations started being made that the central government could present the draft of the Uniform Civil Code in the monsoon session of Parliament, but this did not happen. However, after this, the BJP-ruled state of Uttarakhand implemented the Uniform Civil Code law in March 2024. Uttarakhand became the first state in the country to do so.

Reacting to the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocating Uniform Civil Code, Bhupesh Baghel had then said that if it is implemented, what will happen to the culture and traditions of the tribals? He had said that this issue is always seen from the Hindu-Muslim perspective. Tribals follow their traditions. What will happen to the tradition of tribals if Uniform Civil Code is implemented. BJP does not agree with this statement of Bhupesh Baghel. BJP’s opinion is that tribals are a part of Hindu culture.

So will the Uniform Civil Code be implemented in Chhattisgarh soon?

After the statement of Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, speculations have intensified that the state government will soon pass the draft of the Uniform Civil Code in the assembly and implement it in the state. It is not that the debate on the Uniform Civil Code has started recently in the state. Shivratan Sharma, who was a BJP MLA during the Raman government in 2015-16, had presented a non-official resolution regarding this in the assembly. This resolution was passed in the house with a majority. The Congress, which was in the opposition then, had strongly opposed it.
