Raipur. In the cabinet meeting held today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, it has been decided to conduct the election of Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Presidents of Municipal Councils through direct method. Congress has strongly objected to this decision an
Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress’s communication chief Sushil Anand Shukla said that the prime minister is elected through MPs, the chief minister is elected through MLAs, but the mayors and chairmen are elected indirectly, so BJP does not trust that.
Sushil Anand Shukla said that BJP does not trust the Constitution of India. It does not trust the provisions of the country. Whether the election is direct or indirect, the Congress party is fully prepared. The atmosphere in the state is against the BJP. Most of the mayors and chairpersons will win from the Congress.
This decision does not make much difference – Mayor Dhebar
Mayor Ejaz Dhebar said on the decision to elect mayors and chairpersons through direct system that this is not a new decision. He told that this information was already being received through all the leaders. Dhebar said that this system was in place even before the change in the previous government and this decision does not make much difference. He believed that elections can be held anytime, but should be done soon. He also said that whatever the system, only Congress will have mayor in the bodies. Finally, Dhebar also alleged that the government is afraid of holding urban body elections due to the law and order situation in Chhattisgarh.
During the Bhupesh government, it was converted into an indirect system
It is worth noting that in the cabinet meeting held at Mantralaya Mahanadi Bhawan on Monday 2 October under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, it has been decided to conduct the election of Mayor of Municipal Corporations and President of Municipal Councils of the state through direct method. For this, the draft of Ordinance 2024 was approved in the meeting regarding amendment in various sections of Chhattisgarh Municipal Corporation Act, 1956 (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024 and Chhattisgarh Municipality Act 1961 (Amendment) Ordinance 2024 (Provisions related to direct election and reservation).
It is worth mentioning here that in the undivided Madhya Pradesh state, before 1999, the election of the Mayor of Municipal Corporations and the President of Municipal Councils was done directly. The then Bhupesh government had decided to conduct the election of the Mayor of urban bodies and the President of Municipal Councils indirectly, the notification of which was published in the gazette on 12 December 2019.
