Rain, humidity and contaminated water can breed a variety of bacteria, some of which can cause eye infections. The risk of virus and bacteria increases due to increase in moisture in the air during rainy days. Due to this, the problem of conjunctivitis, redness, eye flu etc. starts in the eyes. Conjunctivitis is spread by viruses and bacteria, due to which it spreads easily from one person to another. Conjunctivitis is also called the problem of pink eyes. Most of the time this problem is cured by normal treatment. The risk of it becoming serious is less. Since the eye is the most sensitive organ, it needs special care. Allergic conjunctivitis can cause problems like itching, watery eyes and swelling.
Director, Epidemic Control Dr. Subhash Mishra told that conjunctivitis is a contagious disease which spreads through contact. Hence the patient is advised not to touch his eyes. The spread of this disease can be prevented by keeping the things used by the patient separate. The belief that the disease can be spread by looking at an infected eye is just an illusion. This disease spreads only by contact.
*What are the symptoms?*
Eyes turn red in eye flu. Eyes start watering, there is burning sensation, yellow and sticky liquid starts accumulating on the eyelids. Swelling occurs along with stinging in the eyes. Its commonly visible symptoms are watery eyes and itching. If the infection is deep, then the cornea of the eyes can also be damaged, which can affect the vision of the eyes. The risk of eye flu is highest in children during the monsoon season.
To prevent eye flu or conjunctivitis, take full care of cleaning the eyes and wash them frequently with cold water. Avoid coming in contact with any infected person. If you are suffering from conjunctivitis, do not touch your eyes again and again. Wash hands thoroughly before putting eye drops in the eyes. Applying ice on the eyes provides relief from burning sensation and pain. Avoid going to dirty and overcrowded places during infection. Do not shake hands with the infected person and do not touch their belongings like spectacles, towel, pillow etc. Also, do not share your towel, handkerchief, spectacles etc. with anyone. If these things are taken care of, then soon this problem can be solved.
In case of any eye related problem, it is advisable to see an eye specialist. Otherwise a serious situation may arise. Eye check-up and treatment facilities are available free of cost in medical colleges, district hospitals, community health centers and primary health centers.
