Mahatma Gandhi Rural Industrial Parks becoming catalysts for women’s economic empowerment
Raipur, 09 June 2023
In an effort to enhance rural livelihoods, the Chhattisgarh Government has established the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Industrial Parks (RIPAs) as hubs for employment activities in villages. This initiative has motivated local women self-help groups and budding entrepreneurs to actively engage in various income-generating activities being conducted in RIPAs to uplift their economic status.
RIPA has provided essential infrastructure and facilities to facilitate the smooth operation of these income-generating activities. In the Chitaud Gauthan of Gurur Development Block in Balod district, the women’s group has received guidance and assistance from the government, enabling them to commence the fencing wire manufacturing business which has now become the cornerstone of their livelihoods.
It is worth mentioning that in Chitaud’s RIPA, a total of eight women from the Maa Vaishnavi Women Self-Help Group are involved in the manufacturing of fencing wire. Their consistent sales have paved the way for their financial independence and empowerment. The group has earned a net income of Rs 1,33,706 from selling fencing wire worth Rs 6,74,504. This translates to a net profit of Rs 16,713 for each group member.
President of group Smt. Reshma Sahu emphasized the importance of the fencing wire manufacturing business, as it has created employment opportunities within their village itself. They no longer need to go elsewhere to work. Smt. Sahu mentioned that all group members have received proper training in manufacturing fencing wire and maintained a consistent sales record. Besides, neighbouring farmers are also purchasing fencing wire from them, which has boosted their self-confidence and increased their enthusiasm for this work.
