Raipur 22 July 2020. Chhattisgarh Home Minister Shri Tamradhwaj Sahu has written a letter to Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah to increase the Centre’s amount under Police Force Modernization, a centrally sponsored scheme to increase the capacity of state police forces. The main objective of this scheme is to identify and fill the gaps required for police administration and operations.
Home Minister Mr. Sahu has written in the letter of request addressed to the Union Home Minister Mr. Shah that the state of Chhattisgarh has been suffering from Left Wing Extremism problem for the last several years. The 14 districts of the state are SRE districts affected by Naxal problem, out of which 8 districts are highly affected. The state government has taken necessary steps to resolve the problem by reviewing the training of manpower, basic facilities and police forces. Work has been done by the state to increase the strength of police stations and to develop the strength of the forces. Presently, about 45 battalions of central security forces are deployed in the state of Chhattisgarh.
At the time of state formation, the force of Chhattisgarh Police was 22 thousand 520, which has now increased to 75 thousand 678. 11 new revenue districts have been created in the state. The number of police stations has increased from 293 to 467 and the number of police outposts has increased from 57 to 115. Apart from STF, there are 22 Chhattisgarh Armed Corps. Various training schools of the STF and Special Intelligence Branch Unit like Police Academy Chandkhuri, CTJW College Kanker have been established in the state. With the increase in police force, they need infrastructure and necessary resources like administrative buildings, construction of houses, weapons, vehicles, telecommunications, equipment, training resources.
Home Minister Mr. Tamradhwaj Sahu has written in a letter to the Union Home Minister that for the last few years the amount received under the Police Force Modernization Scheme has been steadily decreasing. The total size of the approved plan in the year 2013-14 was around Rs 56 crore, which has come down to less than Rs 20 crore in the year 2019-20. Therefore, there is a request to increase the central funds under this scheme for effective action against Naxalites and to expand the state police’s resource base and make it state-of-the-art.
