School children, youth and common people are being affected by Mahatma Gandhi’s first visit to Chhattisgarh and freedom fighters of Chhattisgarh in the photo exhibition put up by the Public Relations Department on the 75th anniversary of independence. It is worth noting that this exhibition will run till August 21, 2022. The exhibition can be viewed from 11 am to 8 pm. This exhibition, running in the local town hall, focuses on the freedom fighters of Chhattisgarh. The life characters of the Ranbankurs who participated in the country’s freedom movement and their contribution to the movement have been highlighted in this exhibition through live photographs. Information about the welfare and innovative schemes of Chhattisgarh government is also being given in the exhibition. Publicity material of various schemes is also being distributed to the visitors coming to the exhibition.
Quiz competition is also being organized to increase the participation of school children, youth and general public in the photo exhibition. Interesting questions are being asked based on the general knowledge of Chhattisgarh and prizes are also being given as encouragement for the correct answers to these questions. Today, on the sixth day of the exhibition, common citizens, youth as well as the children of Swami Atmanand Government English Medium Higher Secondary School, Mana Camp, Raipur visited the exhibition and appreciated the exhibition. School children told that they got informative information about the movement for independence of the country in Chhattisgarh through photo exhibition.
Mahatma Gandhi’s first visit to Chhattisgarh
In Kandel village of Dhamtari district, the British confiscated their cattle during the days of cultivation by falsely accusing the farmers of stealing water from the canal and also imposed a fine of Rs. Therefore the farmers decided to conduct Satyagraha under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
Pt. Sunderlal Sharma went to Calcutta on 2 December to pick up Gandhiji. He reached Raipur on 20 December 1920 with Gandhiji. He was welcomed on the platform by Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla, Thakur Pyarelal Singh, Sakharam Dubey etc. In the evening, Gandhiji addressed a huge public meeting at Gandhi Maidan in Raipur. That place is today famous as Gandhi Chowk in Raipur.
On 21 December 1920, Gandhi left Azad Chowk, Bal Samaj Reading Room, Dhamtari. The British withdrew the anti-farmer order as soon as the information of Gandhiji’s arrival was received. After returning from Dhamtari, Mahatma Gandhi addressed an important meeting in the grounds next to the Anand Samaj reading room located at Kankalipara.
