Raipur, 10 January 2023
Farmers of Chhattisgarh to receive a new reward in the new year. Farmers will be able to protect their crops from weather uncertainties by receiving reliable weather forecasts at the development block level. At a cost of almost Rs 10 crore, a Doppler radar will be installed at the Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidalay Raipur campus to provide precise weather forecasts. Under the chairmanship of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidalay Raipur Vice-Chancellor Dr. Girish Chandel, an agreement was signed today between Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidalay and India Meteorological Ministry, New Delhi for the establishment of Doppler radar. Under the contract, necessary land will be provided by the Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidalay for the installation of the Doppler radar and the cost of its installation and operating expenses will be borne by the India Meteorological Ministry. Director Research Services of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidalay Dr. V.K. Tripathi and Deputy Director General of India Meteorological Department Dr. M.L. Shahu signed the memorandum. It is worth noting that, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel, the state government’s farmers have become immensely rich as a result of farmer-friendly policies and initiatives. Taking the initiative in this regard, the state government would provide another fresh present to farmers.
Dr. Girish Chandel, Vice-Chancellor of Agriculture University, stated that precise weather forecasts could not be acquired in Chhattisgarh due to the lack of Doppler radar installation. The installation of a Doppler radar would provide accurate weather information and forecasts up to the development block level, benefiting 37 lakh farmers and the common people of the state. He stated that the Doppler radar facility was previously only available in Nagpur and Vishakhapatnam in neighboring states of Chhattisgarh, which resulted in farmers of Chhattisgarh not receiving accurate weather forecast information, but that with the installation of Doppler radar, they will now be receiving accurate time. However, more accurate weather forecasts will be accessible, which farmers can use in agricultural-related tasks. Deputy Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department, Dr. M.L. Sahu, stated on the occasion that a ‘C band Doppler radar’ with a wavelength of 4 to 8 Gigabytes is being installed in Raipur. This provides precise information about the ice and water particles in the atmosphere. It can also forecast the coming of storms. This method yields an accurate forecast of unexpected changes in weather. On this occasion, the Dean of Agriculture College, Raipur Dr. G.K. Das, Head of the Faculty of Agricultural Meteorology, Dr. K.L. Nandeha, and many senior officers of the India Meteorological Department were present.
