Experts from across the country deliberated on building a system to measure the tangible and intangible output of the environment.

A two-day national workshop is being organized by the Department of Economics and Statistics on the topic “Environmental and Economic Accounting Tangible and Intangible Production in Chhattisgarh”. Environmentalists and statistics experts from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Mizoram, Jammu and Kashmir and other states participated in the workshop.
Dr. Sudipta Ghosh, Director, National Statistical Office, Government of India, delivered a lecture on Overview of the Environment Account and its linkages with SDGs in the workshop. In which he gave information about the framework for preparing the system of environmental economic accounting. According to which environmental accounting will be prepared in all the states of the country. It was told by him that environmental accounting will be important for the development and policy making of the state, as well as it will be used in policy making. At present, it is very important to link the environment with the economy because it is impossible to envisage the development of the economy without environmental protection. Shri Rakesh Kumar Maurya, Deputy Director General, National Statistical Office, Government of India, delivered a lecture on Theory and Hands on Training on Land Covers.
It is noteworthy that about 44 percent of the geographical area in the state of Chhattisgarh is covered by forests. Three river systems are irrigating the land of Chhattisgarh. The Eco-Economic Account in the state is required to record the natural resources, stock levels, changes in stocks over a period of time, and economic activities that produce tangible and intangible products of the environment. This detail will be important in decision making and future policy making, conservation of resources and ensuring sustainable development. This will also help in mapping and measuring the state’s research accurately.
In the workshop, Secretary of Statistics and Planning Department, Chhattisgarh, Mr. Himshikhar Gupta, Director of Statistics and Planning Department, Chhattisgarh, Mr. Amrit Vikas Topno, Deputy Director General, Mr. Roshan Lal Sahu, Joint Director, Mr. N. Buliwal and other experts were present. The second day of the workshop will see presentation by IIFM Bhopal and lectures by experts on Solid Waste Account, Water Equity, Fish Provisioning Services, New Initiatives of NSO.
