Raipur. After the controversy over NRI sponsored quota in private medical colleges in Chhattisgarh, the verification of documents started from October 19, today was the last day of the same. Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal said that as per the court’s instructions, the documents of those students who have been allotted seats in the NRI quota are being verified as per the rules. The entire situation will be clear only after the verification process and further action will be decided on the basis of the report.
Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal clarified, “No verification, no seat,” which means that if the students allotted seats are unable to get their documents verified, their seats will be automatically cancelled after the stipulated time limit. He said that as per the NMC guidelines, if any seat remains vacant after verification, guidance will be taken from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for further recruitment process.
It is worth noting that on September 24, the Supreme Court gave a decision in SLA (C) 22174/2024 against Punjab and others. In this, MBBS NRI sponsored quota was called a fraud and it was said that only NRI students should be given admission on NRI quota. Even after this, second round counseling was done on NRI sponsored quota seats of private medical colleges of the state. 50 students were also admitted. On the other hand, on the basis of the order of the Supreme Court, the Directorate of Medical Education sought the opinion of the Advocate General and then it was decided that the documents of the students admitted through NRI quota and the registered students should be examined.
There are 103 NRI seats in the state.
Currently, five private medical colleges are operating in the state. Only one college has 15 seats for the NRI quota and the remaining four have 22 seats. By the second round of counselling, admission to 93 seats had been completed, and admission to the remaining 10 seats was to be given through mop-up. After this, an order was issued on Tuesday, October 15, to postpone the allotment of the mop-up round.
Vacant seats for general students
If a seat in the NRI quota remains vacant in a private medical college during counseling, it will be allotted to successful general students on the basis of NEET. This will directly benefit those meritorious students of the state who miss admission due to slightly low marks.
Fraud will be banned
The racket of selling MBBS seats for more than one crore rupees in the name of admission through NRI quota on the basis of the old rule will stop after the implementation of this order. Till now, seats of this category were allotted on the basis of the rule of the year 2018, which was also availed by students who were ineligible.
