Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh lodged an FIR against the members of the Editors Guild on Monday, September 4. The guild is accused of trying to promote violence in the state. In a report, it described the leadership of the government as biased.
Biren Singh has filed a case against three members of the guild. The names of these three are Seema Guha, Bharat Bhushan and Sanjay Kapoor. There has been no reaction yet from the Editors Guild in this matter.
CM said in the press conference- I give a warning to the members of the Editors Guild. If you want to know the truth then go to the place of incident. Know the truth. Interview people from all communities, then publish the information you find. It is wrong to give any results by meeting only selected people.
The Editors Guild had raised questions on the state government in its report. According to the report of ANI, the Editors Guild had shared its report on social media handle X (Twitter) on September 2. It was written along with it that – It is clear that there was no impartial leadership at the time of violence in Manipur. The government should not have taken the side of any one caste in this matter. The government has failed to remain democratic.
The fire in the Forest Department office was attributed to the Kuki community. ANI said – The Editors Guild made a mistake in a photo in its report. The guild published a photograph of a burning building in Churachandpur district and claimed it was home to the Kuki community. While this building belonged to the Forest Department office, which was set ablaze by a mob on May 3. The Editors Guild accepted its mistake on X (Twitter) on Sunday after the matter of wrong photo came to light. Guild further wrote – We are sorry for the mistake in the photo caption. It is being improved. New Manipur Report has been uploaded.
State’s problems increased due to people having weapons
On September 1, Lieutenant General PC Nair of the Assam Rifles had said – People of both the castes in Manipur have a lot of weapons. Due to this, difficulties are increasing in the state. This fight needs to stop. People should be told that peace is the way forward now.
Presently, there are situations in Manipur which have never been seen before. A similar battle took place in the early 90s between the Nagas and the Kukis and finally the Kukis.
More than 160 deaths in ongoing violence since May 3
The violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities in the state since May 3 has resulted in over 160 deaths so far. During the hearing of this matter in the Supreme Court, the Center had told that 6 thousand 523 FIRs have been registered in Manipur. Of these, 11 cases are related to violence against women and children. The Supreme Court had on August 7 said that 42 Special Investigation Teams (SITs) would investigate cases related to the Manipur violence.
Know in 4 points what is the reason for Manipur violence…
The population of Manipur is about 38 lakhs. There are three major communities here – Meitei, Naga and Kuki. Meitais are mostly Hindus. The Nga-Kuki follow Christianity. Belongs to ST category. Their population is about 50%. The Imphal Valley, which covers about 10% of the state’s area, is dominated by the Meitei community. The population of Naga-Kuki is about 34 percent. These people live in about 90% of the state’s area.
How the controversy started: The Meitei community is demanding that they too be given the status of a tribe. The community petitioned the Manipur High Court for this. The community argued that Manipur had merged with India in 1949. Before that they had got the status of tribe only. After this, the High Court recommended to the state government that Meitei be included in the Scheduled Tribes (ST).
What is Meitei’s logic: Meitei tribesmen believe that years ago their kings called Kukis from Myanmar to fight the war. After that they became permanent residents. These people cut the forest for employment and started cultivating opium. This has made Manipur a triangle of drug smuggling. All this is happening openly. He formed an arms group to fight the Naga people.
Why the Naga-Kuki are against: The other two tribes are against giving reservation to the Meitei community. They say that 40 of the state’s 60 assembly seats are already in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley. In such a situation, by getting reservation for Meitei in the ST category, their rights will be divided.
What are the political equations: Out of 60 MLAs of Manipur, 40 MLAs are Meitei and 20 MLAs are from Naga-Kuki tribe. So far only two out of 12 CMs have been from the tribe.
