GST raid on the firm of contractor Suresh Chandrakar, accused of murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar: Theft of Rs 2 crore revealed

Raipur. On the instructions of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, the Commercial Tax Department is continuously taking action against tax evaders. The GST team has raided the firm of contractor Suresh Chandrakar, accused of the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar. Investigation has revealed tax evasion of Rs 2 crore. The Commercial Tax Department is conducting a detailed investigation in this case.The State Commercial Tax Department inspected the premises of M/s Suresh Chandrakar, a road construction firm located in Bijapur district, on December 27. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the firm has claimed ineligible input tax credit of more than Rs 2 crore in the past financial years. Finance Minister OP Choudhary said that the investigation by the State Commercial Tax Department has found that more ITC claims than the eligibility have been identified by the firm in the past years. ITC was claimed on ineligible items like vehicles and clothes, which is against GST provisions. Necessary records and invoices were found incomplete at the business site. Minister Chaudhary said, the seller has accepted these discrepancies and made an initial payment of Rs 30 lakh tax on 30 December 2024. Other payments are still pending after verification of documents. A detailed investigation of the records, including matching of GST returns and bank statements, is being done by the department to determine the final liability.

It is noteworthy that in view of the complaints being received in cases of GST evasion, the Commercial Tax Department is investigating commercial firms at various places in the state. The Commercial Tax Department has given instructions to take strict action on such cases.
