This Shivling is many centuries old and Lord Shiva himself has appeared here. This Shivling is not only revered by Hindus but also by Muslims, because a Kalma in Urdu language ‘La ilaha illallah Mohammadurr Rasulullah’ (considered to be the holy sentence of Islam) is engraved on it. Mahmud Ghaznavi got Kalma engraved on Shivling
There are popular beliefs that when Mahmud Ghaznavi was attacking India and looting the temples of India, he came to know about this temple. He reached here and destroyed the temple and also tried to uproot the Shivling, but Ghaznavi’s entire army failed to uproot this Shivling. The deeper his army dug, the more the Shivling grew.
It is said that after failing to uproot the Shivling, Ghaznavi got the Kalma engraved on this Shivling. The only purpose of Mahmud Ghaznavi to get the Kalma engraved on this amazing Shivling was that people of Hindu community could not worship this Shivling, but in today’s time this Shivling has become an example of communal harmony. Not only Hindus but Muslims also come here. On one side Hindus worship and on the other side Muslims pray in front of this Shivling.
