r. Dahariya attends the national workshop on “Faecal Sludge Management”

Dr. Shivkumar Dahariya, the Urban Administration Minister, inaugurated a two-day national workshop on “Faecal Sludge Management”. The workshop, jointly organised by the Department of Urban Administration and Development, UNICEF, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, was held on June 15 and 16 at a private hotel in Nava Raipur, Atal Nagar, aiming to address this important topic.
During the national workshop on “Faecal Sludge Management”, Minister Dr. Shivkumar Dahariya highlighted the significance of managing used water in Chhattisgarh. He emphasised that it is the responsibility of urban bodies to provide essential amenities to citizens, such as roads, electricity, water, and cleanliness. Dr. Dahariya urged participants to study Chhattisgarh’s sewerage and faecal sludge treatment model and share their own best practises of their respective states. He expressed gratitude to all the states for their active participation in the workshop. On the second day, attendees were encouraged to visit the Sewerage Treatment Plant in Nimora and the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant in Kumhari to observe Chhattisgarh’s efforts in this field. As a concluding remark, Dr. Dahariya called for making Chhattisgarh the leading state in ‘used water and septage management’ across the country.
Dr.Dahariya emphasised the need to treat sewerage water effectively as it has led to a decline in the water quality of ponds. He urged officers of urban bodies to prioritize regular cleaning and beautification of the ponds, particularly those directly affected by sewerage water.
During the two-day workshop, representatives from Haryana, Maharashtra, and Odisha showcased exemplary work carried out in ‘faecal sludge and used water management’ in urban bodies of their respective states. The Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) also delivered a presentation. A panel discussion was conducted with representatives from Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, and UNICEF. On the second day, participants visited the Sewerage Treatment Plant in Nimora, Raipur, and the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant operated by Kumhari Municipality.
The workshop was attended by 75 representatives from 21 states and union territories, along with representatives from organisations such as the Government of India, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Centre for Science and Environment.
