Eminent international chess player from Chhattisgarh, Ms. Kiran Agarwal has been appointed as the coach of Indian chess team by All India Chess Federation. Ms. Kiran will be participating as a coach in the 16-member Indian team to be included in the Commonwealth Chess Championship to be held in Sri Lanka from November 13 to 23. Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel congratulated him on being appointed as the coach and said that his sportsmanship and experience will benefit the Indian team. Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Shri Umesh Patel congratulated him and said that he has been instrumental in nurturing new sports talents. Under his guidance, the Indian chess team will definitely do its best. Earlier in 2004, Kiran Agarwal of Bhilai in Durg district had achieved the distinction of becoming the coach of the Indian chess team.
Chess players of the state are happy on the appointment of Kiran Agarwal as the coach. It is noteworthy that at the time of Chess Olympiad, torch relay was brought in Chhattisgarh and Kiran also got the good fortune of holding the torch. Besides Ms. Kiran, Praveen Thipsay, V. Ravichandran and Prasannajit Dutta have also been appointed as the coaches of the Indian chess team.
Achievements of
Kiran Agarwal Ms. Kiran Agarwal is the only female chess player from the state, who has been conferred the title of Women’s FIDE Master by the World Chess Federation. Kiran has represented India in more than 15 major countries like London, Dubai, Germany, Yugoslavia, Bangladesh, Doha (Qatar) and has made her opponents stand out. In view of his achievements, the then Madhya Pradesh government had awarded him Vikram Award in 1986.
