Palm is widely cultivated in Indonesia and Malaysia. Palm oil obtained from it is used as edible oil. The geographical location and climate of Chhattisgarh are suitable for palm cultivation. In view of the immense potential of its cultivation in the state, its cultivation is being promoted.
Apart from the edible oils of palm oil, it is also used for making cosmetic products. Till now palm oil is being imported into our country from abroad. It is being cultivated in our country in the last few years. There is a good potential in Chhattisgarh, in view of this, the Horticulture Department is focusing on the cultivation of palm oil. This will help in increasing the income of farmers along with crop diversification.
To create awareness among the farmers and common people about the cultivation of palm oil, the cultivation of palm oil is mainly depicted in the stall of the Horticulture Department in the Science College ground of the capital Raipur. Due to the climate of Chhattisgarh being favorable for its cultivation, it is being cultivated in Mahasamund, Balod, Korba, Kanker areas. Palm oil is being cultivated in 7187 hectares in the state and its area is continuously increasing. At present, 467.65 metric tonnes of palm oil is being produced in Chhattisgarh. It is likely to increase further. Various aspects related to the cultivation of oil palm have been displayed in the stalls of the Department of Horticulture. Information is given on various stages of planting, inter-cropping, harvesting, collection center and various products of oil palm.
It is worth noting that the life span of the oil palm plant is 30 years, its production starts after three years of planting, which produces 15 to 30 tonnes per hectare in a year. Also, 4 to 6 tonnes of oil will be produced per year. Due to this, the farmer will get an average income of 1.5 to 2.5 lakh rupees. In the cultivation of oil palm, the government is giving a grant of Rs. 20 thousand in planting material and Rs. 5250 per year for 4 years for maintenance and inter-cropping.
