Raipur. 20 August 2022

Under the Cornea Blindness Free State Scheme in Chhattisgarh, 281 people’s eyesight has been restored so far. According to the survey conducted in the year 2019 , 1069 patients who were blind due to corneal whitening were identified in the state. Eye donation fortnight is celebrated every year from 25 August to 8 September to promote eye donation. Cornea Blindness Free State Scheme is being operated from the year 2019 to cure blind patients due to whiteness of cornea in the state. There was some disruption in its speed due to the global pandemic Corona. In this scheme the NGO And private sector eye hospitals have also given consent for free operation of people included in the list of blind people due to whiteness of cornea.

281 corneal blind operations have been done in the state . At the time of the introduction of the Cornea Blindness Free State Scheme, in 2019 , a provision was made for the waiting patient coming from another district, if necessary, to put cornea from other state. But in Chhattisgarh there was never a need to import corneas from other states. Presently this provision has been abolished. The news published in a newspaper “ Chhattisgarh will become the first state to buy cornea” is misleading , as there is currently no such provision under the scheme.

The need for cornea transplant is being met by promoting eye donation in the state itself. State cabinet members , senior state officials and enlightened citizens have announced eye donation. Due to this other citizens are also getting inspired to donate their eyes. Notable work is also being done by newspapers and media organizations to promote eye donation.

Eye donation takes place after death. Eye donation should be done within six hours of death. For eye donation, the eyes are removed by the doctor himself at home, which is free of cost. Even if no one has declared eye donation before death, the relatives can still donate the eyes of the deceased person. If the eye donor has diseases like AIDS , jaundice , cancer , rabies , snakebite , septicemia , tetanus and hepatitis before death, then his eyes are considered ineligible for eye donation. Eyes can also be donated after eye surgery and people wearing glasses. Diabetic patients can also donate eyes. Two blind people can see the world again with one eye donation.
