5 development blocks of Chhattisgarh are in the grip of ground water crisis, 21 are included in the semi-crisis category, Water Resources Department has issued a letter to the collectors

Raipur . Instructions have been given to keep a constant vigil on groundwater survey and exploitation in the state and construct necessary structures for groundwater enrichment through MNREGA, District Mineral Trust Fund and Disaster Management Fund etc. The order has been issued by the Water Resources Department located in Mahanadi Bhawan, Ministry to all the collectors of the state.

In the letter, referring to the ground water survey report prepared by the Regional Director, Central Ground Water Board, Government of India, Ministry of Jal Shakti, it has been said that there are 146 development blocks in Chhattisgarh, out of which 5 development blocks including Gurur in Balod district, Navagarh, Bemetara, Berla in Bemetara district and Dharsiwa in Raipur district are in critical situation as per the ground water survey and exploitation report.

According to the report, 21 development blocks, including Balod, Gunderdehi of Balod district; Saja of Bemetara district; Takhatpur, Belha of Bilaspur district; Dhamtari and Kurud of Dhamtari district; and Durg and Dhamdha of Durg district; Rajim and Phingeshwar of Gariaband district; Pandaria of Kabirdham district; Charama of Kanker district; Khairagarh of Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai district; Basna and Pithora of Mahasamund district; Pusaur of Raigarh district; Rajnandgaon, Dongargaon, Dongargarh of Rajnandgaon district; and Baramkela of Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district and Surajpur development block of Surajpur district are in semi-critical condition. The remaining 120 development blocks have been considered safe in the report.
